Sandburg to Offer 1-day Training on Mental Health First Aid

Carl Sandburg College is partnering with Bridgeway to provide a one-day seminar on how to help someone experiencing an emotional or mental crisis.

A training course on mental health first aid will take place from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. May 3 in the Center for Manufacturing Excellence on Sandburg’s Main Campus in Galesburg, 2051 Tom L. Wilson Blvd. Mental health first aid teaches how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experience a mental health crisis. The course is delivered by certified Mental Health First Aid USA instructors who have completed a five-day training and meet certification requirements.

Attendees will learn:

  • Risk factors and warning signs of mental health concerns.
  • Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis and substance abuse.
  • A five-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health concern or in crisis.
  • Evidence-based professional, peer and self-help resources.

There is no cost to the course. Pre-registration is required, and the class is limited to 30 participants. Attendees must be 18 or older. Lunch will be provided. Counselor/social work and nursing CEUs are available upon request. Educators may earn eight clock hours.
